The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon

A sleek urban oasis
VERIFIED LUXURY

The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon brings the brand’s signature swagger to Japan in spectacular fashion. Housed within the 38-story Tokyo World Gate skyscraper, the modern retreat eschews classic luxury tropes like marble floors and opulent chandeliers in favor of moody bars and minimalist accommodations that somehow feel more home-like than the most decked-out suites.

Rustic woods and lush greenery feature liberally in the luxury hotel’s design, creating a kind of oasis from the slew of skyscrapers overtaking the Tokyo skyline. Low lighting and a rich color palette in restaurants and bars invite you to linger longer over a nightcap, while a serene spa provides a much-needed city break. But no matter where you choose to linger, stunning views over Japan’s capital city — punctuated by the striking red-and-white Tokyo Tower — are never far from sight.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Among the firsts The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon brings to the capital are private terraces on 15 of its signature suites and the Jade Room and Garden Terrace, a Japanese outpost for internationally acclaimed British chef Tom Aikens.
  • Architect Kengo Kuma (who also imagined Tokyo’s Olympic stadium) was tapped to design the brand’s first Tokyo hotel in partnership with EDITION hotelier Ian Schrager. The result is a sleek and modern retreat aimed at attracting Japan’s next generation of visitors.
  • The aforementioned Jade Room churns out fusion plates of seasonal local produce prepared with classic British techniques. For an even more elevated experience, opt for a table on the Garden Terrace to dine among shimmering skyline views in a secret garden-inspired setting.
  • An unusual luxury in Japan, The Tokyo EDITION is home to a moody indoor pool. The conservatory-like space features lush greenery, double-height ceilings and high windows that allow both privacy and plenty of natural light.
  • Taking its cue from the golden age of cocktails, Gold Bar occupies a prime spot on Tokyo World Gate’s ground floor, making it a see-and-be-seen spot for the city’s Instagram-famous glitterati. Savor a crafted cocktail from the bar’s Two Faces menu — every tipple comes with a unique tale that inspired its creation.

The Look

  • The marriage of Kuma and Schrager’s influences is perfectly at play in the 31st-floor lobby. The former’s signature Yamato-bari wooden cladding adds textural interest to a space adorned with more than 500 plants positioned to Schrager’s liking.
  • While the luxury hotel is more Soho House than Japanese ryokan, The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon does pay homage to its heritage in subtle ways. Public spaces, for example, are decked out in black, blue, jade and gold — all hues inspired by regal elements and precious stones.
  • The property’s design draws inspiration from the intentional layout of Buddhist temples. While religious sites are anchored around a central courtyard, the luxury hotel boasts a two-story, greenery-filled lobby that acts as the main gathering place.
  • Sleek cabin-like accommodations are the definition of cozy with a minimalist aesthetic and natural elements used throughout. Behind the deceptively simple design is plenty of hidden tech, however, in the form of touchpad-controlled curtains that slide silently aside to reveal stunning skyline views.
