More mini-city than hotel, the 1,479-room Hotel New Otani Tokyo is a behemoth in Japan’s capital. Built more than 50 years ago for Tokyo’s first Olympic Games, the property has become a mainstay in the metropolis’ high-end hotel scene.

Of its three hotels, Hotel New Otani Tokyo The Main boasts 556 plush rooms and spectacular garden views through oversized windows (Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star boutique Hotel New Otani Tokyo Executive House Zen and the 40-story Garden Tower can also be found on property).

But it’s not all quantity over quality here. An immaculate Japanese Garden surrounds the modern stay and provides a leafy foil to its sleek and stylish interiors, and friendly staff members stand ready to help you at every turn.

The possibilities here are endless: attend a tea ceremony, dress in a silk kimono for portraits, luxuriate in one of the indulgent spas or check out the sports car showroom — there’s even an onsite dentist.

More than 35 restaurants serving everything from tempura to pasta should satiate any craving, and myriad gyms and a jogging trail through the lush surrounding neighborhood provide plenty of opportunity to work off that indulgence. This is one place that really does have it all, and it’s right in the middle of Tokyo.

Our Inspector's Highlights

Hotel New Otani Tokyo is famous for its 400-year-old Japanese Garden, a unique offering in such a large city. The 10 acres of green trees and lawns, vibrant red bridges, koi ponds and waterfalls in the middle of town is a spectacle that is beautiful in any season, but spring (May and June) and autumn (October and November) are the best times to see the magnificent rooftop Red Rose Garden in bloom.
The property boasts the largest hotel pool in central Tokyo. The seasonally open (spring and summer) outdoor oasis is great for swimming during the day and becomes a glamorous champagne and cocktail bar with a live DJ by night. These opulent pool parties have been a New Otani standard for 20 years, always with new themes and drinks.
With its array of onsite dentists, doctors, clinics, spas and personal trainers, this luxury hotel makes a great spot for a health retreat. The surrounding gardens and pool add an extra air of seclusion.
You’ll be spoiled for choice with 37 different restaurants and bars serving everything from French and Polynesian plates to Japanese cuisine and dim sum.
It occupies an ideal location: close to the financial district, government buildings and the nightlife hub of Roppongi. The property is surrounded by parks, palaces and temples and affords unobstructed views of Mount Fuji, Akasaka Palace and greater Tokyo.

Things to Know

Hotel New Otani has its own label of Drappier champagne, an organic variety produced especially for the luxe lodging. The exclusive sparkling sip can be enjoyed at most of the property’s restaurants.
The Tokyo hotel is a popular place for weddings and functions of all sizes, thanks to its spacious ballrooms, Japanese Garden, tea house and numerous restaurants.
Transport from the hotel to anywhere in Tokyo (or, indeed, the rest of Japan) couldn’t be easier. There is a queue of taxis waiting outside with English-speaking attendants to help you get to the right place, and six railway lines are within walking distance.

The Rooms

The Main building's 556 beautifully designed rooms (21 of which are suites) are elegant and simple, letting the splendid garden views take center stage.
The exclusive “Shin-Edo” Japanese-style rooms are furnished with locally made textiles and traditional cypress wood bathtubs. These accommodations come with complimentary sake and Hotel New Otani’s custom-made soap.
The suites feature a modern Japanese ambiance with sleek furnishings and views of the Japanese Garden in most. Two suites are furnished in a traditional tatami style with woven grass mat floors, paper screens, low furniture and fresh ikebana flower arrangements.

The Restaurants

The most famous of the property’s restaurants is Tour d’Argent Tokyo. A Parisian institution since 1582, the French fine dining venue is magnificent, adorned in period pieces, shimmering chandeliers and classical French furnishings.
For a taste of Japan with a view, head to Sekisin-Tei. Housed in a Japanese-style cabin tucked in the property’s verdant garden, this tiny teppanyaki overlooks the koi pond and serves quality Japanese beef and seafood cooked before your eyes.
San Francisco’s renowned Trader Vic’s Polynesian restaurant and bar has its only Japanese branch in Hotel New Otani. This tiki bar brings tropical cocktails from exotic islands to your table, beautifully presented with fresh fruit and flowers, and paired with an Asian-Tahitian fusion menu unlike anywhere else in Tokyo.
Hotel New Otani is known for its pancakes — thick, fluffy hotcakes are served at Satsuki, Tower Buffet and The Sky buffet restaurant. The New Otani Shop (the hotel’s boutique) even sells packets of the popular pancake mix for you to take home.
